Movie Meme Day 12 - Best soundtrack/background music in a scene

I've always been a big fan of movie soundtracks.  I think it started because I like musicals so much, I became aware of the music used in movies.  Sometimes it's the new music created for a movie specifically and sometimes it's the way music is combined to augment the story.  I think my favorite soundtrack has to be from Forrest Gump.  Following the story of Forrest from his childhood through adult and fatherhood, the music helps keep us grounded in what is going on in the country at the same time Forrest is leading his own life.  It does a great job making you feel like the story is that of any person who just happens to keep getting involved with pivotal moments in American history.  The music starts with Elvis Presley and includes parts of the best of all the decades like Bob Dylan, Randy Newman, and Burt Bacharach.  Because they're American classics, the soundtrack stands on its own better than most movies.

If you've listened to my latest Matineecast, you'll know that I'm a massive fan of the way "I Broke the Windows" is used in STEP UP 3-D!

(jokes)

In all honesty, one of my favorite music-in-a-scene moments these days is a bit cliche, but I still dig the moment in GARDEN STATE when Sam hands Andrew her headphones...telling him that he has to listen to this song, and that it'll totally change his life. Then of course "New Slang" chimes in on the soundtrack.

I live for moments like that!

I did have a tough time deciding between this and Garden State. Great music there.

Indeed!

Of course, the "Tiny Dancer" sing-a-long on the bus in ALMOST FAMOUS would make my list, but that sorta goes without saying.

Great soundtrack indeed, I own it myself.

Hard to argue with the all-encompassing nature of Gump, and I surely own it as well, but I find that it's a little too perfect, too...generic (?) for me to really love.

Pulp Fiction is near the top for me, and thank god for the audio snippets from the movie; I don't know if they started that trend, but they certainly helped to popularize it.
