TV Meme: Day 11

Day 11 - A show that disappointed you

I have often talked about my love for Battlestar Galactica.  I really liked the finale, I pushed through the odd episode, sure that the whole thing was going to be worth it, and it was.   When watching TV with other people, I will often shout "don't trust him, he's a Cylon" when an actor from BSG appears.  So, when they announced they were doing a prequel TV show, I was all for it.  Add Eric Stoltz and I was even intrigued.  I gave it a good college try for 4 episodes, including rewatching the 2-hour pilot because I thought I might have missed something.  However, Caprica didn't have the same energy as BSG.  Obviously the characters were different because it takes place several generations before the actual BSG characters.  It should have told more of the story of how the different worlds were created, instead it went into the minutia of how the Cylons were created by a young girl who blew herself up in a terrorist plot.  Yeah, I was just as confused.  So I gave up.  I really really wanted to like it, but just couldn't get into it.

I've been meaning to get into Battlestar Galactica someday. I think Buffy writer Jane Espenson worked on both BSG and Caprica.

@David Bishop: Jane Espenson also worked on FIREFLY! Basically, she's made the rounds on plenty of hit sci-fi shows and every Joss Whedon-related production.

Re CAPRICA: I really dug the 2-hour pilot, but haven't had a chance to watch the 9-episode half-season on SyFy. So your post has made me a little weary, but at the same time...it's BSG y'know? I MUST watch it. Someday.

Yea, I knew Jane Espenson worked on Firefly. She even edited a compilation of essays about the show called Finding Serenity that I bought and got signed by Joss Whedon when I met the guy.

I think of her as a Buffy writer more though just because she didn't get a chance to write many episodes of Firefly.

You have a signed copy of that book by Joss Whedon?!?!?!

Alright, this is me trying to pull a Jedi mind trick on you, sir: *You don't want that book, you want to send it to me free of charge...*

Is FINDING SERENITY any good? Is it mostly just short side stories or does it continue along after OBJECTS IN SPACE?

I wouldn't have given up on it. Sure, it's NOTHING in comparison to BSG. It's totally different. But the later episodes did get better, especially once they started delving more into the virtual world. The video game atmosphere to those episodes were great... and what "Gamer" should have been.

I think it took me about 5 episodes to really get into Caprica and even than I was only marginally invested. If Zoe weren't so cute, I'd probably have cut and run sooner. It seems there's a great story they want to tell, but the show is on a very, very slow boil.

Guess I'll decide if I'm sticking with it if it gets picked up.
